Orion XS 1400 50A DC-DC Battery Charger from Victron is a powerful and smart charger that enables safe charging of service batteries from the starter battery, even in systems with intelligent generators. The charger is specially designed for dual battery systems in vehicles and marine environments, such as motorhomes, boats, service vehicles, and other mobile or fixed applications where reliable charging is crucial.
This model is a so-called non-isolated DC-DC charger, which means that the input negative (-) and output negative (-) are electrically connected. Therefore, the charger should only be used in systems where both the starter and service batteries share a common ground or common negative busbar. This is common in most vehicles and boats but should always be checked before installation.
Orion XS 1400 uses Victron's advanced BuckBoost technology, allowing it to raise or lower the voltage as required. It works with both 12 V and 24 V on input and output, providing great flexibility during installation. Depending on the combination, the charger delivers the following output currents:
• 12 V in to 12 V out: 50 A
• 12 V in to 24 V out: 25 A
• 24 V in to 12 V out: 50 A
• 24 V in to 24 V out: 50 A
This makes it ideal for systems where, for example, you want to charge a 24 V service battery from a 12 V starter battery – or vice versa. The charger adapts to the set output voltage and ensures correct charging with high efficiency, up to 98.5%.
The charger provides up to 1400 W output power and has adjustable current up to 50 A. It is easily controlled via Bluetooth with the VictronConnect app, where the user can configure both charging curves, start/stop logic (e.g., via voltage or ignition signal), and monitor performance in real time. Orion XS is completely fanless, providing quiet operation, and is equipped with several protection features such as overheat protection, overvoltage protection, short circuit protection, and reverse polarity protection.
The unit is also compatible with VE.Smart Networking, enabling wireless synchronization of multiple chargers and measuring units. It also opens support for DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) when used together with a Victron GX device. DVCC allows centralized control of charging current and voltage levels for the entire system, providing maximum control and optimization, especially when using lithium batteries.
