Victron Energy Meter EM540 is a 3-phase energy meter used to measure power and energy in 3-phase applications with a maximum capacity of 65A per phase. The meter's data is displayed on a GX device, such as Cerbo GX, and can be monitored via Victron's VRM portal. It is designed to provide accurate measurement and monitoring of energy consumption and production in complex systems.
EM540 can be configured for four different uses in a GX device: as a grid meter used as a control signal in an ESS system, to measure the output from a solar inverter, to measure the output from a generator, or as an AC meter to monitor a specific AC charging circuit.
There are two options for connection to a GX device: either via a wired connection with RS485 to USB interface and cable lengths of 1.8 meters or 5 meters, or wirelessly via Zigbee to USB and Zigbee to RS485 converters.
One of the main differences between EM540 and the ET series energy meters, such as ET340, is how they calculate and display energy data. EM540 calculates imported and exported energy as a total power, where any differences between phases are balanced out. This makes EM540 particularly suitable in countries like Austria and Germany, where billing is usually based on total energy import and export. By using EM540, you can avoid being charged for both import and export from different phases, as the meter balances out these differences.
Compared to the ET series, which calculates energy on each individual phase and sums these to get a total, EM540 provides a more accurate measurement when there are phase differences. This also makes it compatible with Victron's phase compensation function, which maximizes cost savings in an ESS system. Additionally, the ET series meters, like ET340, have no display but only an LED that blinks during active communication, while EM540 calculates energy as a total power.
In summary, EM540 is the best solution for systems where energy import and export are handled as a total unit, especially in countries where billing is based on total energy. The meter is a powerful tool to optimize energy management and ensure that your energy consumption and production are monitored correctly.
