The Galvanic Isolator VDI-16 A is designed to protect your boat against electrolytic corrosion that can occur when low DC currents enter via the shore power cable. These currents can cause damage to the boat's underwater metals, such as the hull, propeller, and shafts, through corrosion.
The isolator works by blocking these unwanted currents using two diodes connected in an antiparallel configuration. The diodes only conduct current when the voltage exceeds a threshold of about 1.4 Vdc, preventing galvanic currents from causing corrosion due to small voltage differences between metals.
The VDI-16 A is easily installed directly behind the boat's 230V socket. Under normal conditions, the galvanic isolator effectively prevents current conduction between the boat's metal parts. If a higher fault voltage occurs in the AC circuit, the diodes will conduct current and allow the residual current device to activate and cut off the power to ensure the boat's electrical safety.
